Prejudice and Related Concepts

Values are the foundation for actions we choose to take—or to avoid” (Koppelman, 2014, p. 3).

Individuals need to understand how values are learned in families and in communities and examine how those values affect individual behavior (Koppelman, 2014). Why? Because understanding is the first step to knowing why you take action to bring about change, and/or why you and others exhibit certain behaviors and embrace values and beliefs. With this in mind, assess your own values, both positive and negative, and determine how these values have made an impact on your life.

In this Discussion, you will examine your individual values in terms of cultural context.

To prepare:

•Review the Resources for this week. View the media. Note: The Optional Resources contain some excellent video media from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

•Think about your values and beliefs. Where do they come from?

•Consider which of your values and beliefs are consistent with what you were taught at home. If your background includes some values you might consider negative, have you been able to overcome them? If so, how did you do so?

•Think about the values and beliefs you have developed from exposure to the thinking of peers, groups to which you belong, experiences you have had, and other external influences.

•Think about how society might overcome negative values.

With these thoughts in mind:

Week 1 Write a 1- to 2-paragraph response to the Discussion….an analysis of your own values and beliefs, both positive and negative, about human differences with regard to others who are different. Determine how these values have made an impact on your life, addressing the following:

•From where do the bulk of your values come?

•Are all of the values that are passed on to you by your family, your culture, or your friends necessarily positive?

•How might society overcome negative values that have been passed down through generations? How would this create positive social change?
